India has long been regarded as the archa eologist's and antiquarian's paradise. R.B. Foote of the Geological Survey of India made history when he discovered paleolithic implements near Madras in 1863. A pioneer in this field, he soon became a recognized expert and spent much of his leisure in col lecting available material which tended to throw light on the habits and culture of prehistoric man. His entire collection of artifacts is contained in the Art and Ethnological section of the Madras Museum. The completion of the catalogue of the Foote Collection in two volumes was done after Foote's death in December 1912. The first volume contains a descriptive list of the objects in the collection arranged according to the districts and localities in which they were found. The second includes the author's notes on the ages and distribution of the antiquities, plates and maps, the general index and certain addenda written by Foote shortly before his death. An invaluable and authoritative reference work for the archaeologist and the anthro pologist.
